The Alaska Flag: A Student’s Design Under the Big Dipper

Oct 26, 2026 · 2 min read

Eight gold stars on a blue field, drawn by a student in 1927.

Drawn by a 13-year-old

The Alaska flag was designed in 1927 by Benny Benson, a 13-year-old student, in a territory-wide contest. It became the state flag when Alaska joined the Union in 1959 as the 49th state.

The Big Dipper and the North Star

The design shows the Big Dipper and the North Star in gold on a dark blue field, a simple image that reads clearly even on a small pin.

A favorite for travelers

Visitors to the Last Frontier look for a keepsake that says Alaska at a glance. Flag pins, magnets and keychains do exactly that.
